With a list of over 1653 sp. Ecuador ranks fourth in the world in bird diversity

Fourteen species are found only within the boundaries of Ecuador. Such is the case of the Black-breasted Puffleg, the offical bird of Quito, which is only found on Pichincha Volcano. Another 260 species are found only in Ecuador and its neighboring countries.

More than 100 sites of special importance of bird diversity have been identified in Ecuador. These sites are know as IBAs (important bird areas), and are part of an international program designed to protect sites of exceptional importance for bird conservation. In Ecuador this program is coordinated by Aves & Conservation, a parthner of BirdLife International. The main criteria for the identification of these sites are the presence of endangered and/or endemic species and the presence of migratory and gregarius bird species.

Ecuador is one of the premiere destinations for birding in the world, with more than 1,653 species in the continental area plus 38 more in the Galapagos Islands.

Ecuador's Amazonian faunal zone alone has more than 600 species of birds, and several other Ecuadorian zones are nearly as rich.

With this high avifauna diversity, Ecuador is considered one of the wonders of the natural world with a high percentage of endemism found in its Choco and Tumbesian ecosystems. Nowhere else on the planet can you find this diversity in such a small country!

No less than 12% of Ecuador's territory has now been incorporated into the protected national system, giving this avifauna a great opportunity to continue existing in its natural environment.

Ecuador's IBAs are found not only in national protected areas, but also in urban sites. More than 50 % of Ecuador's IBAs already have tourist facilities and are growing in infrastructure.

No other country in the world has as many bird species in such a small land area. With a list of over 1653 species, Ecuador ranks fourth in the world in bird diversity. You don't need to be an expert to experience the exhilaration of encountering such a variety of birds. Their amazing assortment of colors and intriguing habitats are irresistible !!!.

Hummingbirds have an overpowering attraction to observers due to their iridescence and acrobatics. In the Andes, these birds are commonly know as "QUINDES" (from the indigenous Quichua world). More than 130 species live in Ecuador, including the stunning Sword-billed hummingbird and the Fiery Topaz. An outstanding example of diversity is seen at hummingbird feeders on the west slope near Mindo where up to 28 species have been seen in one day, a world record !!!

birds in Mindo

Birds also play a special role in the ecology of cloud forests. Birds are both harvesters and planters of cloud forests. Birds keep insect populations at bay. Birds compose the soundscape of the cloud forest. Their songs and calls echo through the dense mid and understory of the forest. Without the sounds and songs of birds, these forests would feel abandoned and empty. These forests provide a safe haven for wintering birds. These forests are also important foraging areas for migrating birds that winter further south and pass through on their way to their nesting grounds in the north.

This journey will take you to the Cloud forests of the Western Slopes of Ecuador, filled with Hummingbirds and other beautiful and rare birds like the Cock-of-the Rock, Tanagers and Toucans. We will also spend time at the grassy highlands (known as Páramo) home to the impressive Andean Condor. We will descend the Eastern Slopes to experience their own unique mix of wildlife and Cloud forests which have some similarities to the Western Slopes but are still quite distinct. You will finish up at the superlative Napo Wildlife Centre in the Amazonian Lowlands where Parrots and Monkeys will be the main attractions.

We offer daily birdwatching tours, the Mindo area and northwest Ecuador remain our special area of expertise, we are specialist in birding tours throughout Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

Our most popular tour is located just two hours from Quito, cloud forests of the northwestern Andes are bird-rich places. We visit the major birding sites, including Yanacocha, Mindo, Reserva Las Gralarias, Bellavista, Paz de las Aves, Tandayapa, Milpe, Silanche, Mashpi-Chontal and others.
